Product Development Engineer

An Average Day

Every day looks different. Somedays I am working on product/pattern development, draping, sewing, upholstery, and testing for new products or product improvements. Somedays I am working in CAD to create drawings or models, working to train operators on a new product, or developing work instructions, amongst a myriad of other things.

Past experience

Industry-wise I’ve been everywhere from locks and small parts, to automotive, to steel structures, with the commonality being the phase of the product life I worked in – product development or research and development. I love to be involved in the process of creating a product from start to finish, but if I have to choose a favorite it is most certainly the development phase.

In addition to the engineering side of my career I’ve always fostered a passion for the textile arts (sewing, embroidery, etc.). I’ve been sewing by hand since I was a kid when my mom and maternal grandmother taught me, I had my first machine at 10, and was mostly self-taught up until college where I studied in costume design, history, and construction. So, I actually also have a minor in costuming in addition to my engineering degree.

Favorite memory

It’s hard to pick a favorite when you are surrounded by great people, so it’s less about any one specific memory and more that I love how for everything we do here, people are passionate about it. Halloween? Everybody shows up and shows out in costume. Christmas? Family style employee lunch together and festivities.

Fun fact

I enjoy sewing historical garments in my free time, my favorite era being the Victorian bustle periods. My husband and I have gone to a number of historical costumed balls and events – the Bridgerton Ball being a favorite!

We also have two black cats, and Halloween is pretty much a religious holiday in our household. When I’m not sewing, I’m most likely found with a book and cup of tea.
