Engineering a View of the Stars: Custom Planetarium Project
The LJ Design & Manufacturing engineering team recently completed a unique and rewarding project—a custom fabric planetarium designed for use in a museum setting.
We manufactured multiple units in a range of sizes, each constructed with a white exterior and black interior to enhance visibility during indoor star-gazing presentations. The centerpiece of the structure is an 18-foot diameter half-sphere that creates an immersive environment for projecting constellations and other astronomical visuals.
To achieve the precise fit and curvature required, our team used a combination of real-world frame measurements, 3D modeling in SolidWorks, and flat pattern development in DraftSight. These patterns were then cut on our CNC Pathfinder textile cutting machine, ensuring accuracy and consistency across all units.
This project is a great example of how LJ Design & Manufacturing combines technical expertise, advanced equipment, and creative problem-solving to bring complex sewn soft goods to life.
